| Celebrating 70 years of
Ministry x 2
On
Sunday 25th October, members at St Paul's, Grange, were proud to honour
two venerable gentlemen. Canon Jack How and the Revd Peter Nock have
celebrated 70 years of ministry - a remarkable achievement. Newspaper
headlines in 1939 said 'Jack How and Peter Nock ordained - war breaks
out' and they have been fighting the good fight ever since!
Jack
was born in Durham and educated at Marlborough and Magdalene College,
Cambridge. He was ordained at Durham Cathedral in 1939. He
served at various parishes within the Durham Diocese, including St
Andrew's at Roker in Sunderland where he met his wife, Anne. After
20 years, he left the Durham Diocese and moved to Cumbria to take on the
parish of Barton with Pooley Bridge, from where he became the Rural Dean
of Penrith, a post that he held for 14 years. His next move saw
him spend over 30 years, 1973-2004, at St Mary's Parish Church, Kirkby
Lonsdale.

Peter
was ordained as a priest in the chapel of Rossall School, Fleetwood, by
the Bishop of Blackburn. He served for 25 years in the Blackburn
Diocese, in a number of parishes in Wyresdale in north Lancashire and
also spent time at Darwen. He then moved to the Birmingham Diocese
for the next 17 years, at St John's at Sparkhill in Birmingham and at
Sutton Coldfield where he was Rural Dean.
|
They both retired in 1981 - 28 years ago, and
then carried on! Jack, together with his wife Ann, continued his ministry
in this area, leading worship, singing in the choir at Cartmel Priory and
being quietly pastoral for many years. Peter and his wife Vicky moved to
Dufton, in the Eden Valley, and similarly continued to contribute to church
and community life. Eventually they both moved to Grange where they
'retired' for the second time. The Revd Alan Baker led the service, and
paid tribute to these two special gentlemen.
Doris leaves the parish
|
On Friday, 29th October, a surprise tea party was held in
the Meeting Room so that friends and neighbours could say their
'goodbye' to Doris Carruthers. Doris and her husband, Alan,
retired to Grange some 22 years ago, from the parish of St James with St
Thomas in Wigan where Alan
had served as vicar. Alan and Doris were well-loved members at St
Paul's, Alan regularly leading worship, particularly during the
interregnum when the Revd Alan Gibson retired. Sadly Alan died 10
years ago, and now Doris has decided to move to Penrith to be nearer her
elder son, Graham, and his family. We wish her
every happiness in her new home.

A new member joins the 'team'
 |
On Saturday, 31st October, members of St
Paul's were out in force at Cartmel Priory to support Annette Miller as
she was admitted and licensed by the Lord Bishop of Carlisle as Reader.
Members of St Paul's choir joined the choir of Cartmel Priory for the
occasion. The service took the form of Evening
Prayer and was a celebration of the Reader Ministry.
The following day, Annette preached at the main
morning service at 10.45 am, as well as taking part at 8 am, 9.30 am at
the Fell Church, and the All Saints Day service in the afternoon.
St Paul's now has three Readers - Joyce Leach, Annette
and Keith Waller. May the Lord give them wisdom, courage, strength
and love to do his will.
