A walk round Rydal - Saturday, 1st July 2006
|

On the 1st
July seventeen members of the parish and two dogs gathered in the Church
car park before setting off for the annual parish walk. All
enjoyed the summer sun as they walked round Rydal Water. The party
started at White Moss car park, crossed the road to the lake, over the
wooden bridge and then up to the cool air of Rydal Cave.

Although
those who were expected to quarry a ton of slate and stone daily from
this cave in the 19th century lived in huts on the hillside,
we left the rocks where they were and descended to the Badger Bar, or
nearby picnic spot, for a welcome lunch. This was the perfect place to
stop for those who did not wish to continue. But for those who were
drawn by the temptation of an ice cream from the van, back at the car
park, the walk continued past the church, up the short but steep climb
to the woods behind Rydal Mount and along a woodland path referred to as
‘The Coffin Route’. |
|
As the sun burnt through the
overcast morning sky, the trees provided shelter from most of the heat
enabling us to enjoy the clear views down the glacial lake, its islands
and of the cave we explored earlier. A steep, uneven descent alongside a
small stream back to the car park proved no match for the agility of
parishioners familiar with the hilly roads of Grange.
The ice
cream was delicious, and the company charming. When is the next outing?
